Comparison of Image Resolution Limits in Glass and Polymer Waveguides

Augmented reality waveguides are often treated as perfectly flat. However, some degree of roughness present will blur the final image. By comparing the optical system’s modulation transfer function, we find that waveguides made from glass, which can have smoother surfaces can transmit higher resolutions than plastic waveguides, which are often rougher and harder to polish.
