Achin Bhowmik is chief technology officer at Starkey Hearing, where he is leading the transformation of hearing aids into multifunctional AI-powered communication and health devices. His work on intelligent devices has earned numerous accolades, including TIME’s Best Inventions and the Gold Globee Award for “the Most Innovative Person of the Year in Healthcare.” He is an adjunct professor at Stanford University, where he is affiliated with the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the Wu-Tsai Neurosciences Institute. His research and teaching encompass the areas of computational perception, sensory augmentation, and intelligent systems. Previously, as vice president and general manager of perceptual computing at Intel, he led pioneering efforts in 3D sensing, computer vision, and immersive technologies, contributing to the development of autonomous systems and virtual-reality devices. Bhowmik is a member of the Forbes Technology Council. He is on the board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute; the board of directors for Mojo Vision and OpenCV; and the board of advisors for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley, and the biomedical engineering department at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He is an executive board member of SID and served as president from 2022-2024. He is a Fellow of SID, AAIA, and IEEE. He has authored 200 publications, including two books, and 80+ patents.
