Byoungkwon Choo, Ph.D
Principal Research Engineer
Display Research Center / Samsung Display Co., Ltd.
Yongin, Republic of Korea
Dr. Byoungkwon Choo is a Senior Research Engineer at Samsung Display, where he has worked for 18 years across display R&D, manufacturing, and process innovation. He earned his Ph.D. in Information Display under Prof. Jin Jang at Kyung Hee University, where he explored Smart Lithography using Substrate Modification and Cleaning (SMC) techniques to fabricate display devices solely through imprint lithography, without conventional photolithography.
He previously completed his M.S. in semiconductor physics, focusing on LTPS crystallization techniques including Excimer Laser Annealing (ELA) and Silicide Mediated Crystallization (SMC).
Since joining Samsung Display in 2008, Dr. Choo has contributed to the development and commercialization of large-area AMOLED panels, playing a key role in optimizing LTPS devices and scaling thin-film processes for high-resolution applications. His time in the product development division provided hands-on experience in bridging device design with manufacturing feasibility.
Currently, he is leading efforts to introduce semiconductor-class processes—such as CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) and electroplating—into the display industry. These innovations are being rigorously explored as enabling technologies for the next generation of ultra-high-resolution displays. His recent work is focused on addressing the stringent structural and material requirements of future pixel architectures, with an emphasis on practical manufacturability.
Dr. Choo is also listed as inventor or co-inventor on several patents related to TFT design, interconnects, and advanced process integration. His contributions reflect a consistent effort to translate fundamental research into scalable, real-world solutions that advance the display industry.
