Description:
While providing exciting opportunities for spatial computing, current-generation AR/VR HMDs face visual quality and visual comfort issues. Designing optics and displays that support visually compelling and comfortable mixed-reality experiences is a difficult process, often requiring trade-offs to be made between different components and their capabilities. This seminar focuses on the perceptual requirements of AR/VR HMDs. First, the fundamentals of human visual perception are introduced, with extrapolation to display requirements. Common perceptual issues and display artifacts of AR/VR HMDs are analyzed. Finally, the tools and techniques for conducting perceptual evaluation of potential new devices and architectures are discussed.
